Chapel Hill Police have arrested and charged a man following gunshots on the 100 block of East Franklin Street just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a release from the department.
Officers say Joe Antonio Tyson, 37, fired shots upward into the air following an argument. No injuries have been reported.
“Our downtown officers took this suspect into custody within about three minutes and we’re grateful that no one was injured,” said Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “A deadly shooting on Ashley Forest Road this morning and the shots fired on Franklin Street this evening are difficult reminders that gun violence affects everyone and we will not tolerate it. Our hearts are with the loved ones and community members affected by this violence.”
Police charged Tyson with three misdemeanors: carrying a concealed weapon, going armed to the terror of people, and discharging a firearm within town limits.
