  1. Totally yummy cake! I made this for a co-worker's birthday, and had lots of compliments. I added some finely chopped pecans just on top of the frosting. This cake was so good & easy, and I like the fact that there's no oil in it. I am making it again this weekend for family, and will keep this recipe handy, 'cuz I'm sure I'll be making it over & over! Thanks for posting a great recipe. -M

  4. This recipe is destined to be a FAVORITE in my household. I made it for my daughter's birthday, as a sheet cake instead of in a bundt pan, and topped it with a recipe for Hershey's fudge frosting. It was phenominal!!! Everyone raved! Not only is it extremely easy to make, but it is one of the richest chocolates cakes I have ever tasted.

  5. Oh Yeah!! We were invited to a friend's house for dinner and I volunteered to make the dessert. I am so glad I chose your scrumptious chocolate cake with yummy glaze. A great use of packaged mixes. The texture was very moist and wow, the chocolate flavor was intense. Very impressive. Thanks.

Tweaks

  1. I made this cake for my dad's birthday, and he really seemed to enjoy it. (I didn't eat any because I follow a low-carb diet, but it certainly looked good.) It was easy to make, too. I only made a few changes; I didn't have cake mix on hand, so I made used 1/3 recipe of the homemade cake mix listed on the About.com Busy Cooks site. I substituted brown sugar for the granulated sugar called for in that recipe since I had no granulated sugar on hand. To that, I added about 1/6 to 1/4 cup cocoa and 1/4 cup vegetable oil along with the rest of the ingredients listed in this recipe. I used 1/2 semi-sweet and 1/2 milk chocolate chips, as that was what I had on hand. I also added a bit of vanilla to the glaze as vanilla seems to be a standard addition to chocolate recipes. I would definitely make this for someone again!

  2. Absolutely fantastic!!! I substituted peanut butter chips for half of the chocolate chips, but otherwise folowed the recipe exactly. This is so easy and so amazing. Thank you!

  3. This was super easy and passed the chocoholic Mom's group I brought it to today! No one could believe it had no oil & only 2 eggs because it was soo moist. I used canned vanilla icing heated and drizzled on top; I used dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet; and I decorated around the outside with powdered sugar covered large raspberries (see my pics). I want to experiment using white choc chips inside. Wonderful!

  4. YUM!!! We made this for Easter and it was SOOO GOOD. I made a loaf instead of a bundt and came out with a few cupcakes too. Cake was super moist and chocolaty. Instead of the chocolate glaze, I used cream cheese frosting and topped with shredded coconut. Since it was for Easter, I put some Peeps on top, too. We LOVED melting the peeps on top of the cake. The chocolate chips made it super moist after being microwaved and the melted marshmallow tasted SO good on top of the cake. Will definitely make this again!!

  5. OMG!!!! This is the best chocolate cake I have ever put in my mouth!!! Followed directions for inredients, however made a 9x13inch cake instead of the bunt- easier to take to work.I don't know that I will gve this one away to co-workers.....I did use the chocolate frosting in recipe #89207.If you use this as well,I did use fat-free half and half and did use more than calle for 1/3 C.The cake and frosting together are the best ever! You really must try:) I'll never buy boxed chocolate cake or frosting again!

FAQs

How do you put a glaze on a bundt cake? ›

Hold bowl (or pitcher or pan) with icing over the center of one side of the cake. Begin pouring with one hand while slowly turning the plate or cake stand with the other hand. Anytime you want the icing to cascade down the sides of the cake, just slow down a bit, then continue going around the cake (see video above).

What is chocolate glaze made of? ›

Combine melted margarine or oil, cocoa, and hot water. Blend in confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Pour or spread on brownies or cake. Glaze will harden when cool.

How to add Flavour to chocolate cake? ›

A pinch of espresso powder or instant coffee will add flavor without damaging the sauce. Keep a jar of instant coffee or espresso powder in the pantry next to the cocoa powder so you'll have it ready to add that next-level flavor boost the next time you're baking a batch of brownies or cake, or any chocolate recipes.

Do you use oil or butter for Bundt cake? ›

Butter is a great ingredient for adding flavor and richness to a cake. However, it can also make a cake dense and heavy if used in excess. Vegetable oil, on the other hand, is a lighter ingredient that helps to keep the cake moist and fluffy.

What are the three basic ingredients in glaze? ›

A BASE GLAZE is a mixture of these three basic groups: SILICA, FLUX AND ALUMINA.

What is the key ingredient in a glaze? ›

Silica (or industrial sand) is the key ingredient in glass, raw clay, and ceramic glazes. Silica can be obtained naturally from quartz, sandstone, sand, or flint, or it can be manufactured as silica oxide. When making your own glazes, products like quartz, flint, and pure silica can be added as the glass-former.

What gives chocolate a higher quality flavor? ›

Cocoa Bean Quality: The quality of the cocoa beans used is paramount. Fine-flavored cocoa beans, such as Criollo and Trinitario varieties, are often considered superior due to their complex and nuanced flavors.

Which flavor is best in chocolate cake? ›

No one disputes that one of the very best chocolate cake flavour combinations is fruity. If the cake that you're making uses white or milk chocolate and is very sweet, then something more acidic like passion fruit will work brilliantly to balance out the fat and sugar.

When should you glaze a Bundt cake? ›

Wait for your cake to cool

Plan for enough time to let your Bundt cool completely, because the frosting will melt and run off a still-warm cake.

How do you jazz up a Bundt cake? ›

The round, crisp exterior of the cake makes it a wonderful canvas to drizzle icings on, dress up with sprinkles, douse in syrup, dust with powdered sugar or adorn with candied fruits. The result is always admirable, particularly with a less-is-more mentality.

Can you use canned frosting for a Bundt cake? ›

Grease and flour Bundt pan. Make cake according to package directions. Add can of frosting to the cake batter. Pour into Bundt pan and bake for 50-65 minutes or until pick inserted in center comes out clean.

Should you glaze a cake hot or cold? ›

Cool the cake or pastries completely before glazing. Warm baked goods will make the glaze too runny, and it may soak into the crust, making the cake soggy. Brush away any loose crumbs on the cake or pastries before decorating.

How long should a bundt cake cool before glazing? ›

After removing from the oven, place the pan on a wire rack and let cool; your recipe will specify the required time, usually from 10-20 minutes. This allows the cake to become firm enough to remove from the pan without breaking apart. Cooling too long in the pan will cause the cake to be damp and stick to the pan.

How do you finish a bundt cake? ›

Bundt cakes are amenable to many types of glaze, but more often than not, I find myself finishing them with a simple dusting of powdered sugar (after they've had a chance to cool, of course).

Should you let a bundt cake cool before glazing? ›

First, make sure the cake is completely cool--a warm cake is more prone to crumbling. Second, warm some of the frosting just a bit, and pour a thin layer over the cake.
