The climate of Houston is classified as a humid subtropical climate, with tropical influences. August normally ranks as the warmest month at an average temperature of 95 °F (35 °C) and January the coldest month at an average temperature of 63 °F (17 °C). The normal annual precipitation measures 49.77 inches (1,264 mm).

Downtown stands about 50 feet (15 m) above sea level, and the highest point in far northwest Houston is about 150 feet (46 m) in elevation. The city once relied on groundwater for its needs, but land subsidence forced the city to turn to ground-level water sources such as Lake Houston, Lake Conroe, and Lake Livingston.

The temperature increased rapidly, reportedly peaking near 140 °F (60 °C), 20° above the official all-time high for the state of Texas and exceeding the highest official temperature recorded on Earth.

The coldest day in Houston history was Jan. 18, 1930, when downtown Houston saw temperatures drop to 5 degrees.

Houston's prolonged summer heat wave nearly reached an unprecedented level Thursday, when the city tied its all-time record for hottest temperature. A temperature of 109 degrees was recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport at 2:54 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service's Houston/Galveston office.

The city's official climate observation site, Bush Intercontinental Airport, recorded 45 days last year when temperatures reached or topped 100 degrees. Last year we came within one day of tying Houston's all-time record for most 100-degree days in a single year: 46 days in 2011.

120 degrees in Monahans and Seymour — August 12, 1936, and June 28, 1994. Two dates tie for the hottest day in Texas history. On August 12, 1936, Seymour clocked in a scorching temperature of 120 degrees. Then, on June 28, 1994, Monahans also reached 120 degrees.

“2011 is clearly the summer of record for Texas still, with 2023 right behind it,” explained Karin Gleason, chief of the monitoring section at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Information. Summer 2023′s average high was 98.3 degrees and 2011′s was 100.1 degrees.
