Steeplechase Record Falls, Numerous Personal Records Set by Majors on Saturday

SEARCY, Ark. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs amassed 14 personal records and bettered the men's 3000-meter steeplechase program mark at the Chick-fil-A Bison Open on Saturday.

Senior Patrick Elliott bettered his own record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 38.73 seconds, placing second at the Ted Lloyd Track on the campus of Harding University. He finished less than a second behind an NCAA DII competitor from Harding.

Junior Dez'Tavien Frank continued his fast start to the season by excelling in both the 200 meters (22.76, 29th) and 400 meters (49.86, 10th). Classmate Patch Heard put on a great performance in the 800 meters (2:02.74, 17th) as well.

Elliott along with freshman Greer Hernandez fared well in the 1500 meters as Elliott placed 15th (4:12.86) and Hernandez closed 18th (4:14.38). Hernandez also led a Major trio who cracked the top 25 in the 5000 meters. He finished 17th (16:50.50) ahead of graduate Landry Lemoine (18:08.50, 22nd) and freshman Caden Birch (18:45.00, 23rd).

Freshman Ian McAlpine was strong in both the triple jump (12.17 meters, seventh) and long jump (6.08 meters, 14th), while graduate Bryan Sullivan set a personal best in the javelin (41.42 meters, 22nd).

McAlpine, Heard, Elliott and Frank combined in the 4x400-meter relay to finish seventh with a time of 3:34.90.

On the women's side, numerous personal records were collected across the track and field events. Junior Natalie Burke, freshman Fiona Selders and sophom*ore Ashanti Lastrapes all bettered their previous times in the 100-meter dash. Burke finished 21st (12.79), Selders ended 24th (12.85) and Lastrapes closed 27th (12.90).

The trio also performed well in the 200 meters as Burke (27.20, 20th), Lastrapes (27.33, 23rd) and Selders (27.78, 28th) all broke the top 30. Sophom*ore Ally Hearn competed well in the 400 meters (1:08.68, 15th) as well.

Additionally in the 1500 meters, juniors Sarah Strickland (5:15.05, 13th), Tyler Hamby (5:26.09, 19th) and Fran Edwards (5:34.22, 24th) raced to the top 25. A quartet of Majors also raced competitively in the 5000 meters, including Strickland (20:33.37, 10th), Edwards (20:46.67, 12th), junior MacKenzie Farris (22:46.64) and classmate Abigail Henry (23:05.93, 14th).

Hearn, Hamby, Strickland and Selders worked together to place ninth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:47.03) to complete the running events.

In the field events, sophom*ore Eleanor Scott represented well in both the triple jump (10.65 meters, ninth) and high jump (1.52 meters, 18th). Classmate Sierra Schmidt also earned a spot in the top 10 of the pole vault (2.90 meters, eighth).

Lastly, Burke and Hamby tallied quality marks in their respective field competitions. Burke was 12th in the triple jump (10.28 meters) and 29th in the long jump (4.27 meters). Hamby finished the meet in 15th in the javelin (30.23 meters).

The Majors will be back in action next Saturday, April 13, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet.
